Free Alphabet Letter Formation Cards {PRINTABLE!}

If you’re doing preschool at home, or have a little one that’s interested in learning (whether it’s actually “school” or not), you’ll find these free alphabet letter formation cards helpful! These are great for preschoolers just starting out in recognizing the shapes and directions of letters in the alphabet.

These simple letter formation cards let them trace with their finger or a marker on their cards in order to start recognizing each letter and how it’s formed.

Another way to start recognizing how a letter is formed is to put little beans or beads or anything small like that on the letter’s path. My daughter likes using dry beans! It’s fun for her, and she doesn’t even realize she’s starting to identify the formation of the letter we’re working on.

My biggest tip for making these cards work:

The key thing to remember when letting your child use these letter formation cards and having them remember the letter (over time, of course) is this: talk to them while they’re doing this activity and repeat the name of the letter in your conversation.

For example…..

  • “Here’s your letter I card.”
  • “Here’s your marker – we’re going to trace the letter I!”
  • “Wow, that letter I is beautiful with those beans on it!”
  • “Your letter I looks so nice now that it’s blue!”
  • “You’re doing a great job on your letter I!”
  • “Let’s take a picture of your letter I!”

You get the idea. It’s sooo basic, but just remember to insert the letter name instead of just referring to it as their “card” or “activity” or “school.” This will reinforce the letter name as they are looking at its shape and they’ll be more likely to remember it.

How to use these letter formation cards:

Click on the download button below on your computer, and the PDF will open in a new tab.

The letter formation cards are 5×7 inches, 2 on each page. Print and cut on the cutting lines.

(I printed on cardstock to make them a little more sturdy for reuse.)

To make these cards re-usable, laminate 2 cards per sheet and cut apart.

Use dry-erase markers on your laminated cards so you can wipe them clean between uses.
